Adult Services

Substance Abuse Education & Treatment
Many adults who become drug and/or alcohol involved are not only negatively affecting their own lives but also the lives of other people such as spouses
and children. First Step's trained clinicians utilize a multi-disciplinary therapeutic approach to thoroughly examine and modify any and all aspects of the client's life. Adults who go through our program will find that they learn about themselves, their addictions and the destruction that substance abuse wreaks on their mind, body and concerned others. They have an opportunity to participate in individual, family and group counseling as needed. We also offer psychiatric evaluations and medication management when indicated. Families are also offered counseling because of the integral role they play in the person's healing process. We also provide random
drug testing via breathalyzer and urinalysis.

Counseling
Psychiatric Evaluation and Medication Management
Some clients who are dealing with substance abuse problems require a psychiatric evaluation to help identify any
emotional problems and/or mental illnesses which may be playing a part in their substance abuse. Bringing a mental illness such as depression under control through medication can be an effective way to help a client understand their use of drugs and/or alcohol to self-medicate.

Therapy Groups and Education
First Step conducts coed therapy groups as well as a few separate
groups for men and women to foster a healing environment that is comfortable and therapeutic. The therapy
clients receive provides them with insight into the behavioral causes and effects

DWI/DUI
It is unfortunate when addictions lead to drug and alcohol related driving offenses and/or accidents which can result in tragic consequences. Family Education/Counseling
It is widely believed that alcoholism and/or drug addiction is often generational and affects family members and significant others. By utilizing a Family Disease Model, family members and significant others receive help and support for their own recovery as well as that of the addict. Those involved
may not understand the nature of addiction or the addict's behavior and may unknowingly contribute to the problem without realizing it. Families that have been in unhealthy relationships have learned to take for granted unacceptable behaviors. Education and counseling help confront feelings of frustration, anger and powerlessness while changing the family roles of "enabler".

Alcohol Education Program
The first time someone is charged with a DWI or DUI does not automatically mean
that the person is an alcoholic in need of treatment services. If a person is faced with his first DWI or DUI offense and has no prior history of substance abuse, he may be required by the court to attend an alcohol education program. First Step provides a state-certified
12-week adult education program solely designed to educate the offender in developing more responsible driving behavior.
