Community Services

Substance Abuse Education, Prevention and Treatment
First Step takes a proactive approach in trying to reduce the use and abuse of drugs and/or alcohol among young people. Our work encourages young people to participate in recreational and vocational activities that redirect their energies from being idle to being active. Keeping this population engaged in meaningful and enriching activities can help eliminate the temptation to use drugs and alcohol.
Many civic and religious groups, schools, community organizations and allied health care professional associations seek out information and guidance about how to prevent, identify and copy with substance abuse. We conduct workshops and presentations for these various groups and work with them to customize content to meet their specific needs.

Speakers Bureau
One of the primary ways First Step serves as a resource in the Greater Baltimore area is via our Speakers Bureau. We offer trained professionals who conduct educational programs for various groups, including schools, PTA's, religious and civic organizations. They address a variety of adolescent and family-related topics, including drug abuse, suicide, sexuality, self-esteem, and job search skills. Presentations are customized for each group and can include a lecture, group discussion, question/answer period, visual aids and literature.
